Metadata

Three metadata standards are supported:

  • EXIF - Exchangeable Image File Format

    Version 2.2, April 2002

  • IPTC - International Press Telecommunications Council

    Core Version1.1

    Extension Version 1.1

  • XMP - Extensible Metadata Platform

    Revision July 2010

When image files are imported into the Multimedia module Vitalware examines the image file to determine whether metadata for any of the three supported standards is embedded. If metadata is found, it is extracted and used to populate the EXIF, IPTC and XMP tabs in the Multimedia module.

ImageMagick provides basic support for metadata extraction for a limited set of image types. Support provided is as follows:

  • EXIF supports jpeg and tiff formats
  • IPTC supports jpeg, tiff, pict, ps and psd formats
  • XMP supports jpeg and tiff formats

The Metadata|Extract Registry entry controls what metadata is copied into Vitalware.

Whenever an image is derived from a master image in Vitalware (i.e. a different resolution of the master image), it is possible to copy some or all of the master image's metadata to the derived image. The Metadata|Embed Registry Entry controls what metadata is copied from the master image to the derived image(s).

This section looks at each metadata standard currently available to Vitalware (it is expected that future releases of ImageMagick will provide support for metadata extraction from more image formats, in particular for XMP).
